Curriculum Vitae



Cesare Cesarini was born in 1941 in Bologna, where he is currently working. He attends the Instituto Statale d'Arte in Bologna.

In 1962, Cesare is awarded a prize for black and white paintings at the "Mostra d'autunno" exhibition held in Palazzo Re Enzo in Bologna, with a special mention by Francesco Arcangeli. He participates at the same exhibition every year until 1966 receiving positive comments from several newspapers and in particular Il Resto del Carlino and Carlino Sera (21/11/62; 26/10/63; 5/2/65; 21/2/66). He then focuses on graphic design producing drawings for "Mulhouse" between 1967 and 1970.

In July 1973, Cesare is back to exhibitions and is awarded the prize "Lotte Socialiste per il Progresso e la Pace", the newspaper L'Avanti dedicates an article on his works (29/7/73).

In May 1974, he holds a personal exhibition at the local journalist association receiving the attention of Giorgio Ruggeri who then publishes several articles on it on Il Resto del Carlino (8/6/74); Giornale d'Italia (1/6/74) and "Qui Bologna" (6/6/74).

In April 1975, a new personal exhibition takes place at Studio 15 in Milan. The exhibition is inaugurated by Lino Cavallari and mentioned on Il Resto del Carlino (11/4/75; 12/4/75; 22/6/75).

In the same year, Giorgio Ruggeri introduces another personal exhibition of Cesare to the Art Gallery "Sanvitale", in Bologna. The newspapers Il Resto del Carlino and Alla ribalta publish articles on the exhibition on 18/12/75 and 5/1/76.

In February 1979, Cesari presents a personal exhibition dedicated to the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud at the Associazione Culturale Italo-Francese in Bologna. The themes of the exhibition are "Illuminations" and "Une saison en enfer".

In September 1979, Cesare is awarded the prize "Virgilio d'argento".

Two years after, at the John Hopkins University in Bologna, Cesare holds an exhibition titled "Il tempo degli assassini" based on the book from Henry Miller, and originally dedicated to Rimbaud. The exhibition is introduced by Gabriele Franci and receives large press coverage (6/2/81; 9/2/81; 13/2/81).

In 1982, Cesare focus on drawings on fabrics.

In March 1983, at the British Institute in Bologna, Cesare inaugurates a personal exhibition title "La scena del delitto". The exhibition includes speakers such as Umberto Eco, Giovanna Franci, Guido Fink. The exhibition is mentioned by several newspapers including Il Resto del Carlino (9/3/83), La Repubblica (10/3/83) where Franco La Polla comments: "New horror: a game without fear" and Lino Cavallari: "When the artist plays with fear".

At the same time, prepares representations for the Accademia delle Scienze and the University of Bologna.

His works began to be part of public and private collections in Italy and in the US. Since 1984, the University of Boston hosts a permanent exhibition of Cesare's paintings.

He participates at the national exhibition of art in Monza, where he presents new paintings. He also prepares the representations for the International conference "Il Sublime: Creazione e Catastrofe nella poesia" held at the Accademia delle Scienze and referred to in La Repubblica (3/5/84).

In May 1985 he produces the illustrations of "Il Seminario di In Forma di parole, Pensare la Fine" organized by the University of Bologna and the University of Rome La Sapienza.

In April 1986, he hosts a personal exhibition at the Art Gallery "Montrasio Arte" in Monza. The exhibition is introduced by Alberto Crespi. Luisa Somaini on La Repubblica writes: "Rimbaud made in colour in the delicate paintings of the imaginative Cesarini". Other newspapers publish articles on the exbhition. Among others, Il Giorno "The musical paintings of Cesarini (8/5/86) commenting "After the focus on new horror, which was well-liked by Umberto Eco, the recent works are paintings represent a journey, sometimes nearly a biography".

In May 1986, he produces the representation for the International conference "Un'assenza visibile: L'autore nel testo narrativo" organized by the University of Bologna.

In 1987, he produces the front page for the six texts "La via del sublime" produced by M. Brown, V. Fortunati, G. Franci.

In the same year, he produces the illustrations "Italia com'era" for the editor Casa Editrice Atesa.

In October 1988, he produces the illustrations for the international conference "Bologna, la cultura italiana e le Letterature Straniere moderne" at the Alma Mater Studiorum Saecularia Nona, University of Bologna.

In March 1989, Cesare holds a personal exhibition at the Art Gallery "Biloba Studio" in Bologna. The exhibition is presented by Dario Trento and includes the latest paintings and a retrospective on the ‘60s and ‘70s.

The exhibition is mentioned by La Repubblica (10/3/89) and Carlo Gullotta writes the article "Amor di fraffiti e un tocco d'ironia". Il Resto del Carlino publishes the article "Violenza blandita da tocchi ironici" (25/3/89).

In May of the same year, Cesare participates to an exhibition at the "Biloba Studio" (Il Resto del Carlino "Le dinamiche tensioni di Cesarini", 3/6/89).

In August 1991, Cesare becomes graphic designer for La Repubblica.

In 1995, he designs and execute drawings on a bus for ANT (National Association against cancer).

On 8 June 2000, Cesare opens the personal exhibition "Arte e Moda incroci e contaminazioni" hosting a panel which included Danilo Eccher (Director of the Modena Art Gallery), Giovanna Franci, Roberto Grandi, Guido Vergani. The main sponsors of the event are the University of Bologna, Editoria Feltrinelli and Associazione Culturale Italo Britannica. On 7 December 2001, he hosts the personal exhibition "The Wing of Fashion" as part of the conference "Art, Fashion and Design: Cross-Fertilization and Contamination" at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Stockholm. The event is sponsored by the Italian Embassy in Stockholm and by the University of Bologna.

On 17 May 2003, Cesare hosts the personal exhibition "Vulnerable white hangers" in Los Angeles at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura as part of the festival "Art and Fashion, Design: Cross-Fertilization".

On 11 September 2009, at the Urban Centre at the Salaborsa in Bologna, Cesare held the personal exhibition "Segni della Memoria". The heart of the exhibition was to perform artistically the graffitis found in several cities. The exhibition was followed by a round-table discussion "Signs and sounds: Street culture and music". This project has been run in partnership with Laboratorio di Ricerca sulle Città (Obersvatory of metropolitan research) and with Alma Mater Studiorum,Università di Bologna,Istituto di Studi Superiori,Associazione Culturale Italo-Britannica,Urban Center Bologna.
